Slot drain installation help!

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.25 PM

We had new patio paving laid and a slot drain was used against the garage wall with the paving sloping away. However, I don’t think the drain was installed correctly and I need advice as the garage is now flooding in heavy rain! The patio is now higher than the DPC and now you step down into the garage. Where the patio was laid by the house, a thin line of cement was used against the wall and then the slot drain was installed. House and patio are on the same level and seems to be ok and no damp here. But where patio is laid by the garage, there is no cement line and there is a small space between the wall and the slot drain. I think water runs down the side wall of the garage between the space and hence flooding in garage. Help! Do I need the paving to be lifted up and slot drain reinstalled with cement line? Should this resolve problem or do I also need to do anything else? Thanks

Hi Hatty, Paving should not be higher than 2 courses below damp, or 150mm. The problem is aco drainage is its often not installed correctly. If your installers were happy to bury your garage, they probably didn't correctly install the needed soakaway either, making the drains pretty ugly decorations. There is hope! if you remove the decorative drains and install a 100-150mm shingle strip (this must lead to an aggregate subfloor, not a solid or concrete surface) Its possible you will have no more issues. I have rectified flooding and damp problems on poor installations in this way. Failing that you will need a full lift and relay, and a soakaway installed. Best of luck
