Bricklaying & Repointing

Imperial/reclaimed brick with metric blocks

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.25 PM

I am building an extension with reclaimed/imperial bricks trying to match the originals of my 1980s mock Tudor house. The inside side skin will obviously be built with metric blocks. Quite a few of my reclaimed bricks are 75mm+. Should I prioritise keeping all joints at 10mm, in which case the coursing will be out and I would not be able to ensure my wall ties are horizontal. Or, would it be better to vary joint widths to ensure coursing remains lined up and walls ties perfectly horizontal? I have worked out this shouldn't be too difficult if I ensure the wider bricks are used every third course.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

The breeze blocks will need to be bedded up to match the level of courses bricks to insure all ties are level .Wall ties can also be put in the cross joints in the brickwork and twisted to sit on the blocks.

Build the block work 1st, keep beds of brickwork at approx 10mm then put ties where needed virtually impossible to keep them perfectly horizontal when doing this . But by building block work 1st you having an easy time getting them to work in.

Keep the brick beds to 10/12mm but fit longer 275mm wall ties every two blocks high as normal. The longer ties will bend down and meet the brick top. Don’t be tempted to bend the ties upwards. Down only if needs to now and again. Fitting the ties every 450mm high as you should, will allow your 50mm insulation to be fitted correctly to the block
