Advice on building a straight staircase to integrate it with a support post. (Images included)

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.40 PM

I'm currently in the planning stage of a remodel and need advice on how I can have a straight staircase altered/built so that the stringer will be intersected by a support post that currently sits beside the staircase, but I want to be flush with the staircase. My floor plan designers told me the alteration would take away the structural integrity of the staircase and that I'd be best talking with a stair company. Take a look at the images I'm linking to below. The photo shows the current staircase with the support post beside it that supports the upper floor (the post is half a foot from the stringer). The 3d models show what I'd like (for the support post to be integrated into the staircase). I know the post can be moved, but regarding the staircase being integrated, is this a fairly straightforward job for a joiner and would the structural integrity of the staircase be fine given the job is done properly? Does the joist configuration seem realistic, since I've had to move the red beam along to the right to make room for the stringer to hang over the joist. And would it be the job of a joiner I hire to make sure they're doing the alteration to meet building regulation standards for building control to pass? (FYI: The staircase is a typical straight staircase that stretches from ground floor to 1st floor in a typical British house, just so you have an idea of size when looking at the pictures). https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/867732129626193953/900455155739263006/1.jpg https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/867732129626193953/900455073530937385/stairs_all_frames.png https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/867732129626193953/900454952307138600/stairs_all_frames_different_angle_coloured.png Thanks for any help! @MACAND CARPENTRY: Sorry, I forgot to add that Yes, the area under the stairs to behind the post needs to be open as I intend to use it as desk space. You think this is doable? If it’s not my floor planners job to sort out the structural calculations for this, then whose job is it? Would a carpenter/joiner be expected to handle that when they take on the task? Just wondering what to email back to my floor plan designers because I’d be hoping the task could be done by the joiner using the current materials rather than ordering a new stair case altogether as they seemed to suggest 😖

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I think a tie into the post supported by uprights underneath would easily pass any inspection. The issue is whether you want the space below the stairs to be open? Edit. Well the chippy could come up with an idea that you could go back to the planner or building control with. I think it's doable with supports on the post underpinning the string and tread/s around the post.
