Fitting new system boiler with old immersion tank

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.56 PM

Good morning, I am looking to replace my 30 year old conventional boiler with a modern system boiler. We currently have a very old immersion tank in an airing cupboard and gravity fed cold water tank in the loft. I want to achieve a reliable source of stored water and really good water pressure throughout the house. Would it still be worth fitting a sealed system and system boiler using the old immersion tank? Or would we be better off installing an unvented cylinder? The cylinder is expensive and we may move in a year or two but I am unsure whether we'd get the benefit of the new boiler using the old immersion tank. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Ben

Yes I would definitely go for a unvented cylinder as this will be mains fed, giving better pressure throughout the house. This Would also benefit you when you decide to sell up having a more up to date system. You will benefit from just a new system boiler but ideally I would renew both to get the full benefit as well as being more efficient and eco friendly. Hope this helps

Hello , It's always worth having a dynamic test of your incoming main pressure before you consider converting to an unvented system. It's highly likely to not be an issue but worth checking before you commit. Most plumbers can do this for a small fee. I would definitely recommend an unvented system over a vented supply. It's much more hygienic than systems I've seen with loft tanks in the passed and adds value to your property usually. Good luck !

I would just swap it for a combi boiler as not much more work involved

If you have a small house a combination boiler would be better If a larger house unvented system would be better But if your going to do the unvented system I'd highly suggest get a air source heat pump system When set up right you can have lower energy bills
