Do I need to remove asbestos cement before removing gas boiler?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.02 PM

Need to have a very old boiler replaced. Gas supply is in a metre cupboard that contains asbestos cement (confirmed today with a proper test). British Gas engineer says it needs to be removed by a specialist before a new boiler can be installed. A local company is quoting 550 to remove the asbestos panels so wondering if it is really necessary to remove it? I know asbestos can be dangerous if disturbed but it’s in good condition and I’m unsure if it’s necessary to drill into it to fit the new boiler. The boiler is on the other side of the wall from the cupboard, flue currently goes through a regular brick outside wall. Any advice much appreciated. Thanks, Ben

Good day, if all of the work can be carried out without disturbing the asbestos then it should be fine. Gas engineer should know if any new holes need to be made

All it takes is for the asbestos to be disturbed and the fibres are then airborne. I think £550 is a good investment in health. You can’t put a price on peace of mind so I would get the Asbestos professionally removed.

As you know asbestos can be dangerous, I would advise to get someone who is specialise in it then install your boiler. So you are safe

I would have it removed, as it has the potential to cause problems in the future, as the cement degrades over time it will release the asbestos fibres into your home
