Removal of cement render

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.02 PM

Can I remove the cement render from my Victorian property to have it back to brick? Will doing this potentially ruin the bricks by blowing the front face off? I’ve had conflicting advice. My process would be to use and SDS drill then get it sand blasted to clean up the brick.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Often the render is there to rectify a problem, degrading bricks for example. Additionally, to help the render bound to the brick surface the bricks are often roughed up with a chisel. I doubt you would find a good condition wall underneath.

As the above comment mentions it is often hiding an existing problem…. Cement render should not be on your property and in time if not already will only cause damp problems as it will be trapping moisture inside your building.. Instead should be a lime render.. if you have any more questions please message

WHILE REMOVING THE CEMENT RENDER MAY EXPOSE DAMAGED BRICKWORK TO THEM SAND BLAST THE BRICKWORK WILL MOST CERTAINLY CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE ALREADY FRAGILE BRICKS. GOOD LUCK ALEX

Hi. The method you have mentioned for removing the render is right 👍 But, I think you should Begin with a test area somewhere out of view ( less obvious ) if possible and remove 1m2 of render and if the bricks have been (keyed or roughed up) beyond repair stop and put the render back on, Good luck! Could open a can of worms . Removing render can remove bits of brick. Also depends on how well render was screeded. Hollow blown render might be ok which may be removed easily, might need to repoint.
