Rainbow Coloured Stains On New Green Wall Tiles

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.43 PM

Hi I've just had green gloss ceramic subway tiles fitted to my bathroom. After the guy grouted there seems to be a rainbow Coloured stain across most of the tiles. Almost like when you see oil on top of water. I've tried rubbing at it with a wet cloth and it doesn't seem to be shifting at all. I'm hesitant to use anything more abrasive. The discolouration never appeared until after grouting. Any ideas what this might be or what's caused this effect? Thanks

A fairly common problem with certain types green glazed tiles, particularly tin glazed ones. Without knowing more detail about the tiles I would say its a reaction between the grout ( cement based I assume) that is alkaline and the pigment in the glaze. There is no cure unfortunatly.

Water absorption is the only way that a tile can appear to have changed colour. If water has penetrated behind the tile, or is caught behind the tile it will travel and soak into the biscuit of the tile. Water can penetrate behind the tile through holes in the grout, missing grout, or poorly applied silicone joints.
