Tiling on Plasterboard - how to tell if plasterboard has been primed
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.43 PM
Just got back to find my builder had used plasterboard to back a shower unit. I'm not sure he has even primed it, although he assured me he'd used BAL tiling primer. The plasterboard that has not been tiled over yet looks no different from any other untreated plasterboard I've used - should I be able to tell easily?

Every time I’ve used a tile primer once dry you can see a shiny gloss look to the treated surface

Hello, in a shower i wouldn't recommend plasterboard i would allways use cement board or wedi board.
But if there is plasterboard on a job whats been installed by a builder i will always tank it with a WPS normally mapei is a good one to use.

If it’s been primed you will see the roller marks… I’m more concerned it’s not been tanked if it’s inside a shower enclosure.. you don’t need to prime bare plasterboard to tile it. It’s plaster that requires priming
