How to swap out glazing from aluminium windows
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.43 PM
Hi there, I've been trying to swap out the glazing from some bathroom windows to replace the floral pattern glazing. The windows are aluminium windows set into the original timber frame. I've swapped PVC windows before and the plastic beading was easy to locate and popped out to allow the glazing panels to be swapped. The beading here looks like its on the outside (which for safety and replacing reasons seams odd as I can't reach them from the outside 1-st floor) but it's aluminium and doesn't seem to budge. Is anyone familiar with these? Thanks Nick

Hi nick all the old ali windows were externally glazed and normally have gasket on the inside that needs to be removed first before bead removal outside

If the beading on an aluminium frame is external then it will definitely have a wedge gasket internally which insures the beads can't be removed from external without first removing the internal wedge gasket first, thus making your home secure.
So to remove external beads first remove internal wedge gasket with a paint scraper nothing to sharp however are the gasket may get damaged, push the corner of scraper gently into corner of gasket inbetween the frame and the side of gasket that is up against the frame and and try and drag the gasket out by moving it out over towards the centre of the glass if you can imagine having a wedge of wood stuck under a door this is exactly what the gasket is like apart from there's a slight groove in the gasket that keeps it held in position removed and keep safe all gaskets to replace after unit is exchanged feel free to call me if you have any problems
