Silicon between the worktop and the upstand

The instructions fir fitting the upstands to the worktop instructions the use of 2mm shims under the upstand to take the silicon. What is the best way to apply silicon and achieve a good to perfect finish.....

1. Ensure all surface are free of dust by cleaning down with a multi-surface wipe. 2. Decide of the size of bead you want to apply - I find a 5mm bead is generally appropriate for this situation. 3. Cut the nozzle on your silicone to approximately the same diameter as the bead you want to apply. 4. Run your bead along the joint using even pressure and a nice steady motion 5. Use a silicone finishing tool (such as "Fugi") to finish the bead, wiping the tool regularly with kitchen roll. If you are new to silicone finishing, don't run more than 2-3m of bead at a time and try not to overwork the silicone - 1-2 passes with the tool should give a good finish.
