Should a tiler tradesman be able to do silicone edges next to bath or sink?
Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.44 PM
I recently hired a tiler that quoted for replacing tiles next to my bath and filling the gap between sink and tiles. He took the job ...was very pleasant but when finished had grouted up to bath and said he wasn’t good at silicone edges so I’d need a plumber for the silicone. Only after I paid did I think maybe he should have reduced price if he couldn’t do silicone. Have I been a silly old lady? A separate plumber will charge call out again as well as the job...a few loose tiles is going to cost a fortune!

I am a tiler . And i always make clear to my customers that i dont silcone joins . I.e bath sink up the walls along the cealing . I always so your best outcome is to get a mastic man in . Yes it cost more but get such a neater finish. But i also know some tilers that do silcone but my personally i dont hope this helps

Silicone is somthing that needs doing after 99% of most tiling jobs, some people are better than others but there are tools available to do it and if you take your time a nice finish can be achieved.
I have always belived it is part of the job so yes in my opinion a tiler should be able to Silicone or he has not finished the job

I'm a tiler of 20+ years, I silicone but have my own methods and add extra cost to the job to do it, the reason most tilers won't do it is because the grout takes 24 hours to dry and silicone should NOT be done until fully cured (don't listen to anyone that tells you differently) so an additional call out plus the work & materials have to be accounted for. Hence the reluctant tilers, they make more money tiling than coming back to silicone, this in turn sets mastic prices through the roof making tilers question their career choices! But supply and demand make things pricey what can you do 🤷♂️

Using silicone is part and parcel of being a tiler! I find it shocking that people are calling themselves tilers when they patently are not.

Applying silicone is a tricky job and some tilers don’t do it. It really depends on what the tiler put on his quote. However it is a skill that with practice you can get better. I always make it clear that I will silicone areas after and add the additions cost of clear, white or colour matched silicone.

If a tiler can’t silicone to a good standard he shouldn’t be there in the first place
