Do I need a system boiler or keep my Combi?

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.44 PM

At present we have a 3-bedroom house and a combi boiler (EcoTec pro 28). It seems in good working order. We have low water pressure so we have to tolerate a dribble of water in the shower when someone flushes the loo. We are getting our house extended to 5 bed, 3 showers. I had planned to change over to a system boiler with a Megaflo (or cheap alternative), but a BG engineer said there is no need as the boiler I have is fine, I just add the Megaflo etc. I was under the impression I should change by boiler accordingly, but he suggests otherwise. Any views?

As TM heating says, a combi can be used as a system boiler. A Vaillant system boiler will just be the same size and shape as your combi but with several working parts removed. I've seen some people add a cylinder to the house and blank off the hot water outlet on the combi boiler and I've also seen the combi used for the nearest hot tap only but the rest of the hot taps taken from the cylinder. Vaillants are good boilers as long as the system has been flushed properly. You might as well keep it.

Having a unvented cylinder run off a combi will work with pipe alterations, to solve your pressure issue ideally you would need bigger mains pipe feeding the cylinder and possibly a accumulator tank.

Provided the existing combi is rated higher enough for the additional heating requirements it can be utilised as a system boiler You should however increase your mains pressure if possible Consult your water board for options
