Bricklaying & Repointing

old stone house with breezeblock porch... wondering how best to lime render

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.25 PM

Hello, wondering if anyone can help. Our house is an old stone welsh cottage that was damp and covered in cement render when we moved in. we took all the cement off, allowed it to dry for 12 months and now we're in the process of re-rendering in lime. There is a little porch on the front of the house built out of breeze blocks and rendered in cement. I want to render the proch in lime so it mathes the rest of the house, but unsure of the best way to go about this. Someone suggested we could slice in to the cement and make a sort of lattice pattern and then apply the lime render directly on the cement, but I'm wondering if it would be better to remove all of the cement and apply lime render directly to the breezeblocks... Any advice gratefully recieved! Thanks

If the render has been painted, i would recommend taking it off. If not painted score with an angle grinder and apply a coating of RED GRIT.

Remove and allow to dry as you have done. Apply a strong gauge expamet galvanised mesh, this will help the render to adhere strongly. Wether you use a 3/1 ratio sand and cement mix in 2x coats or lime cement and sand use a top quality damp and frost proofer. When all dry use a good quality exterior paint and seal. DO not render across the dpc. Should be 150mm 6" from ground level. Regards David Williams
