Who and which order for redecorating old house

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.24 PM

We have bought a huge Edwardian house, every room has woodchip paper which needs removing before we can decorate. We also need a rewire and eventually new windows. I have no clue who we need to come in first. I expect electrician will knock off plaster where required, so is it worth knocking off all the plaster, getting first fix electrics then getting a plasterer in and then a decorator ? Or just let electrician do what they need to, and have a decorator remove woodchip, skim and paint ? And is all this work going to be undermined if we get new windows in a couple of years or is it a simple making good around reveals ?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Electrician, then plasterer, then painter. Up to you how original you want to keep the place. Stripping wood chip will reveal cracks that will need pinning before new plaster goes on. You may decide that you want to keep it original and have it painted as is. Most decorators can make good after electricians. Edwardians would have had lining paper everywhere and wallpaper on top of that. Would look great with some punchy Farrow and Ball on all that lovely molding. Good luck with the project!

Personally with the house being so old I would imagine the plaster would be in a condition where it would be better to knock off down to the brick..put first fix electric in replaster..second fix electric and second fix joinery..then decorate..but as most work it all comes down to what the financel situation is
