Question category:
Damp Proofing

Hi we have recently removed an unused chimney stack on the roof which goes down to our kitchen. What would be best to cover this hole with? And also how do we ventilate as ceiling will be shortly plasterboarded. Also could this be the reason we are getting high humidity readings and collecting approx 3 litres of water every night? Thanks
The chimney stack contains a salt called ammonia sulphate and will attract moisture but even more so if you cap it . All chimney flues must be ventilated top and bottom or serious dampness will occur in the structure. A flue actually ventilates the property ; also reduces humidity within the property . Your dehumidifier is collecting seasonal moisture , the humidity is extremely high in autumn, normally.

Can't really add anything to the previous answer. Ventilation is key. I would suggest stopping the dehumidifier it's just costing you electricity. If there is no leak or damp penatration it will only draw moisture from the atmosphere.
