Creaking chipboard floorboards
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.40 PM
Hi, hopefully someone can help with this. I have creaking chipboard floorboards that I've managed to lift and the cause to me looks like noggins being slightly higher than the joists themselves. Could this be the cause and would planing the tops off be the solution? Looks like each board had a sparing amount of PVA to glue them down to the joists and they were screwed as well. I can only think the raised noggins could be the cause? Thanks for any help/advice

Creaking chipboards/floor boards is a common problem and can be tricky to solve.
Assuming no structural problems. The problem being the joist floor has dips and bumps ie not perfectly flat so the high noggin would be an issue.
You should also check the overall flatness of the joist floor by putting a 6ft level on the joists to identify dips and bumps and resolve it.
Its important to fix 1 board at a time and WALK ON IT A FEW TIMES, no creaking then fix the next board then WALK ON BOTH BOARDS and so on.
This requires a methodical and patient approach also the abilty to identify the exact location of creaking....All the best.

if its is 8x2 sheets and you can lift them I would start one at a time, check the joists for flatness and any really high one's plane down then i would glue and fix it down with 65mm screws making sure there are no services where you are screwing, then continue across the room glueing the togues as well

From experience it can be many problems if your joist are creaking near the hangers this could be due to movement when walking on floor and causing a slight amount of movement in the hangers that is causing the creak or it could be if your property is a new build and the creak is near a partition wall in the new builds the walls are now built with Metal partitions and if the sole plate of the metal partition is not surported underneath it will cause a sag when walked across and a slight creaking noise

All chipboard floors are now glued and screwed to the joists. This prevents any creaking boards!!
