Is my wisteria dangerous?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.40 PM

I'm planning a rear extension right next to a really big and old wisteria shrub. It's probably about 80 years old. I don't want to remove it but will it affect the foundations of my extension?

Contact your local building control people and ask them. If you can email them with the question, a photograph of the plant and what you are planning, as accurately as possible, they will normally help you for free and tell you of any issues you might have because of the plant. The most likely outcome will be to have deeper foundations.

Your local building inspector may ask you to get an opinion from a structural engineer. Nobody wants to sign off foundations if there are any anomalies. So be prepared for that. The engineer will look how deep the roots go and the base of the foundation must be lower than the deepest roots. He may also ask for reinforcement for that side to avoid cracking in very dry weather..
