Groundwork & Foundations

How important is it that foundations are levelled before Brickie starts work

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.56 PM

My rear extension site is sloped. Builder dig 1.2m all around and poured concrete in so the slope ground had is now on the set concrete. He did put 4 seperators but its not exactly step foundation, its trench fill and not levelled anywhere in any section. He is saying brickie will sort it out when laying bircks. Should i trust him or get a professional to look at it. Building control guy visited before pouring of concrete and he as happy with 1.2m depth all around. I think it should have been 2m deep on higher point and 1m deep on lower point so it was all levelled. Slope is 1m on the side of existing house towards the edge next to footpath. Any suggestions

As a brickie it's nice if the concrete is level and on a course line or gauge upto the damp proof level. any brickie with experience will be able to sort the problem out, but if the person putting the concrete in showed a little care it should be reasonably level it makes you wonder about the standards the rest of the job will attain to. Good look!

A brickie will always get over this but he probably will not be very happy about it As long as the footings aren’t to high it shouldn’t be a problem

As a groundworker the foundations should be level give or take 10-15mm.. its not down to the bricky to sort out a groundworkers poor workmanship.. and unless theres steps in the stip foundation there shouldnt be any seperators and should work out guage to existing brickwork on the house.. also he should be useing a laser level to get the depth of the footing so even if the ground is uneven the bottom of the footing should all be 1 level

As a brickie the a level of a foundation is really important, as if not it causes time wasting on cutting down blocks, bricks, so if gauged properly it will be a great start to a job and a time saver

It’s not difficult to cast a stepped, level foundation working from existing brickwork. I’d keep steps at 225mm if possible to work out at extra block on inside skin per step. If builder cannot complete this fairly straightforward task to a standard I’d have concerns🤔
