How to repaint internal porch / hallway wooden floorboards

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.56 PM

I have dark wooden flooring in my porch currently and need to repaint. Thought I could use varnish but the wear of the old dark brown colour is showing through. Looks awful. Which is the best paint? And can I just paint over ? Is ronseal diamond hard floor paint the best ?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

The finish that you’ll achieve depends entirely on how much time and energy you want to spend on the flooring. The gold standard (and best eventual finish) would be to sand the flooring down with progressively finer sandpaper until the bare wood is exposed, which then leaves it ready to take whatever finish you choose- whether this be a new varnish, which is harder wearing, or an oil finish, which could produce a more attractive look. Of course, if you don’t want to spend the time doing so, you could give the flooring a direct application of a new treatment, but this approach risks imperfections in the original finish showing through, along with a potentially poor adhesion and finish from the new product. If the flooring and original finish are in relatively good condition, you could well give it a minor sanding down with some sandpaper, and then try applying a new varnish or oil. It’s difficult to suggest which to use without more information, but a varnish tends to produce a harder wearing surface.

I personally would start a fresh with zinsser bin and then go over that with your chosen paint to prevent any reactions or stains coming through. I have used this method in many stained/varnished wooden cabins it works well.

Give the floor a sand and dust off before applying any new paint/varnish finishing. This will help your finish adhere better.A slight matt finish may be advised for safety if you are to place rugs down to avoid slipping.
