Carpet and free standing cooker
Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.56 PM
My kitchen is carpeted with the carpet going under the cooker. Is this allowed still? I urgently need a new cooker, but not sure about our flooring as I don't have the money for new flooring at the moment. I did think of going some lino to place under until I am ready to do the flooring, will this be acceptable?

Hello, sorry to hear you are not in position to change your current carpet flooring however may I say this is a very poor choice of floor finish for a kitchen as carpets will soak up any liquid leaving a pool of liquid undrneath which can lead to other problems such as rot if the subfloor is wood or a build up of condensation, bad smell or at very least an unsightly looking carpet as the wetness will spread.
I will suggest a resillient floor finish such as lino, vinyl, ceramic/porcelain floor tile. Putting a lino underneath your cooker may work only as a temporary short term measure and should look to replace your entire kitchen area with resillient floor finish as soon as you are financialy able.
Regards

Hi, I do not know exactly what carpet you have, but having a carpet (as you would in another room) in a kitchen is a huge fire and health risk. There is no specific law for a home owner to stop you, but it would not pass fire regulations in a new house, kitchen extension or in a rental property. Flooring would need to resist a fire for at least 30 mins. What is the floor like underneath the carpet? Is it concrete? Can you cut the carpet out in the area where the Cooker would stand? If you do not want to remove the carpet, please get a fire extinguisher, Fire Blanket, smoke and heat alarm, if you dont already have them. Stay Safe!
