Bricklaying & Repointing

installing concrete lintels in loadbearing brick walls

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.56 PM

What is the minimum amount of brickwork needed underneath the ends of a lintel in a loadbearing brick wall, with another floor and tiled roof above it? i need to know because my landlord has put in a passage way already and it is very close to the corner of the house, in fact the lintels rest on two pillars of half bricks not attached to the other wall in the corner, i am worried it will collapse.

Think you will need a structural engineer to do some calculations.

It all depends on how wide the opening is, it needs to be a minimum of 100mm 4inch either end of the lintol and what ever it is sitting on needs to be bonded into the brickwork/stonework/block work. This is my method of working but if in doubt a structural engineer or building control advice should be sought.
