Cut short next to skirting
Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.56 PM
Had a carpet laid, around the edge over the gripper, i can feel the gripper pins in places and its like the carpet is cut short, or bits of tuffs missing, its mainly on 1 wall I can feel gripper through the carpet in places, sometimes very sharp
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Due to dodgy carpet layers unfortunately. But my best advice is to buy some lengths of wooden quadrant to follow around the bottom of the skirting board through out the room.

Have you had a thin carpet fitted? if the gripper isnt short pin or been knocked down you will feel the gripper pins through the carpet.
If its genuinely short, id suggest getting the fitter back to either re stretch or replace

Hello. It sounds like the gripper rods have been fitted too far away from the wall. I would suggest pulling up the carpet on the wall that's particularly bad and remove the gripper rods. Lay new gripper rods closer to the skirting and restretch the carpet onto the gripper rods. Then finish with a bolster and tuck the ends of the carpet back under the skirting. I hope this helps.

This could be due to bad installation, or it could be due to the thickness of the carpet , it may just need stretching again , failing this as someone has mention maybe beeding to hide the edge .

If its cut short it can usually be stretched enough so it tucked behind the gripper. As for the gripper pins. You should use appropriate pin length for the carpet. If there not flattened down they will be felt through a thin carpet. Joinery guy doesn't have a clue. Because they don't care about the finish it doesn't mean all trades are like that. Who on earth would put beading on top of a freshly fitted carpet 🤔

Don't ever put beading round a carpet it would look very silly, as for the carpet being short I would 100% get the fitter back to re-stretch and if that's not possible they need to replace the carpet. For the gripper you can use a rubber mallet to just tap down the gripper spikes slightly but not full down as they wouldn't be doing the job they are there for you would just be angling them slightly towards the skirting. Hope this helps.
