Should soakers extend over a ridge abutting a chimneystack?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.02 PM
We have had our slate roof re-slated (Spanish slates) and re-leaded. There is a large chimneystack shared with the adjoining semi. The highest ridge of the house (leaded) runs into this at 90 degrees. Stepped lead flashing runs down the stack from the ridge to front and back, with aluminium soakers underneath. Some time after the job was finished, we had a storm with high wind and heavy rain and leaks became apparent leading quickly to damp. Should the soakers extend over the ridge or should lead flashing be sufficient?

Soakers should extend over the ridge beam then the ridge fitted against the abutment incase water ingress gets between ridge and chimney

The lead soakers should go up as far possible to the top of the ridge line underneath the last ridge. Then an independent lead saddle should be placed from the chimney stack with 75mm upstand & 150mm wide away from the chimney overlapping either side of ridge line over your top soakers underneath the ridge tile itself.

I would recommend The soakers over the ridge beam Then the abutment to stop water between the ridges and the chimney
