No Hot Water from Shower/Problem since bathroom refit in May 2021

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.02 PM

Our mixer shower was fitted in May and within a few days, the cold water supply from the shower stopped and it was just boiling hot all the time. We thought it might have been an airlock because the valve/bar controlling the shower temperature kept getting stiff like there was pressure behind it. A second plumber came out and connected the cold water supply only to the mains, but now we have just cold water in the shower and no hot. The basin in the bathroom has both. I've asked the plumber why we had only hot in the shower and now only cold water, and he has said this is because the cold water supply is stronger than the hot water supply and is overpowering the hot. He said the pressures need to be equal for both temperatures, but this doesn't make much sense to me as we had hot water at a good pressure and now cold water at a good pressure- we have just never had them together. He says the only solution is to get a pump fitted for hot water at a few hundred pounds . We are desperate for advice we are at our wits end and need help.We suspect we are being conned for more money.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I would never be running off to fit a pump unless you were looking for pressure. The plumber that's been and converted the cold to mains has caused the hot and cold feed to be unbalanced. This is why the cold is overpowering the hot. The thermostat in the shower will always favour the cold (to remove the risk of scalding) but it could be too powerful now and won't allow the hot to blend. I agree with Halim in that it's possible that the hot and cold are the wrong way round but this would be a guess without looking.

Not 100% sure.but possible the hot and cold feed to mixer shower have been swapped and installed wrong way round ie. Hot on left cold on right

all Hot and cold feeds to mixer traps and showers should be fed by equal pressure supplies. if your installation has un-equal supplies then you will need to fit an equalising pressure valve (available from BES Ltd At around £50.00) Once the valve has been fitted it should cure the Problem if not the problem lies with the Shower valve. Please don't expect the shower to work correctly if you have unequal pressures.

It could have been crossed originally, then a plumber has connected what he thought was the cold feed from the shower to the mains cold, (which would of been the hot if they were originally crossed) and now its just got 2 cold feeds, or it could just be a faulty thermostatic shower needed replacing or piping up correctly
