Bathroom Fitting

Help! Bad finish on new bathroom part 3

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.42 PM

Hello once again I am back with an update on the tradesman's response to our email. Details of my last question are below 👇🏻 I'm not sure if you can view my previous questions regarding our poorly finished bathroom. In a nutshell, the finish of our new bathroom is appalling. Thick and thin grout lines. Hideous thick and wobbly black silicone down each corner of the room and around the sink, black silicone was not our choice of colour at all, he didn't consult us in which colour we preferred. Chipped tiles everywhere. Damaged vinyl flooring. Damaged sink vanity unit. This is the second time he has been back and he has made it be worse than the first time. So we have had a reply from the tradesman who has seriously botched our bathroom. He states in his email that he will not reduce the costs of the work he has done, if we continue with telling him he is not getting paid the full amount for the works he has done he will be taking legal action. Can he do this if he we are not be entirely satisfied with what he has left us with? He said he will not be returning to rectify anything as he is completely satisfied with what he has done. He goes on about how he has never had complaints ever before, this we know is it a lie as we recently found out from a work colleague he had done some pretty bad work at a friend's house. He also goes on blowing his own trumpet, in how good he thinks his work is. He also wants the names and details of the tradesmen we have had round to view his bad work, whom we got round for opinions, advice and quotes to rectify the hideous mess this man has left behind. What on earth do we do now? I appreciate all of your kind help. Thanks in advance

Hi you should hold full payment of any outstanding fees until the contractor has rectified the poor workmanship or and offers a reduced price to cover the costs of what needs to be rectified. Failing this contact the trading standards officer.

You have a few options 1) you need an independent survey to establish what is required &what is wrong an other tradesman will not be enough it will cost you for this. You need to then give the tradesman time to rectify all errors. If he refuses then you may have no option but to take him to court. For the next stage you will require legal advice they will also tell you if you are legally entitled to with hold payment or if you yourself can be taken to court for none payment for work completed. The law can be an ass sometimes. Good luck Alex

It may be worthwhile to take a trip to your local Citizens Advice Bureau to find out where you would start with any legalities. Rules change all the time and you don't want to get caught out for not knowing.
