Metallic banging, rad heats up, no banging and rad stays cold

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.44 PM

When the CH pump is set to 2 the radiators get hot, but I get a loud metallic sounding banging, if I turn the radiator valves to a lower setting ( or turn the pump to 1) the banging stops ,but one radiator ( always the same one) does not heat up. Could it be the pump ( it’s 20+years old?)

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

No it’s probably the valves either side of of the radiator as some have been fitted round the wrong way, or renew the valves

Most thermostatic radiator valves are bi directional so shouldn’t knock you can normally tell by looking at the valve body and you should see an arrow facing both ways , the pump can be tested with a multimeter set on ohms and test accross the live and neutral terminals any reading below 100 ohms would mean the pump requires replacing , the problem described needs a heating engineer to carry out a full survey of the system .

Banging could possibly be un supported Pipework and rad could be issue with valves incorrectly installed or sludge or air in the system. Would need to see the installation to know for sure.

It sounds like the water is boiling, causing the bangs. Die to the water overheating due to poor circulation. Sounds to like the pump
