Bricklaying & Repointing

What is the correct materials needed for Repointing 1960's brick house

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.43 PM

Currently undergoing reporting and have been told on quotation that new mortar will be made up of sand, cement, lime and sika waterproof additive. When looking at what is being done, I can see sand and cement (e.g. Blue Circle Mastercrete Cement) mixed with water. When I asked about lime and sika, I have been told lime is in the cement and sika will be sprayed onto the walls last - is the true and correct. Thanks in advance.

Repointing in cement is no longer recommended as it acts as a uniform mass. Much better to rake out and repoint in NHL 3.5. It is more workable, gives a better finish and is organic. A Drymix cld90 is perfect for brickwork however if your doing chimney repointing choose heritage fibred 3.5. This is the alternative to using hotline as they used to do back in the day. Cornerstone do a Drymix called newbuild which contains both lime, plastisiser and cement. All are very good products and can be pointed up and brushed the same day.

Re-point the way it should be done and has for hundreds of years sand -cement 4 and 1 mix with plasterciser or sand and lime mix as it more flexible and will move with the building you do not mix cement with lime either one or the other

Well I'm a bricklayer not a pointer but if I had to take on a pointing job I would look at the wat it was pointed before I.e weather struck or normal ironed joint then I would look at what cement was used like normal 4 and 1 or part lime part sand and cement

They should be using lime hydrate with part sand . For a lime mix .. sand and blue circle cement is not a lime mortar 3x1 sand and cement for the perfect repoint . Or 3x1 lime hydrate and sand only .
