Kitchen extractor fan position in neighbours new extension
Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.43 PM
What can I do about the position of my neighbours kitchen extractor fan. they have recently had a new extension built on a town house and have put the extractor fan vent on the wall of the new extension so it vents on on my side. The vent is at right angels about 40 cm from the original back wall and 60 cm above my kitchen window and 1.5 m below my lounge window. These are the only windows in these rooms. When they cook my lounge and kitchen smell of their food which I find unpleasant. What can I do about this?

Contact your local environmental Heath, or better still, try talking to your neighbours to try and resolve it. This is not a helpline for legal or property issues.

I don't think there's any president regarding kitchen extractor exhaust positioning. A call to your local council building control office or public health office my shed some light on this. Better still have a chat with your neighbour about your concerns and suggest they fit pipework to discharge higher up above your windows ,a bit like a soil and vent pipe.

It's it possible to resolve on a personal level and suggest they have the external vent dog legged upwards, like a commercial external vent would be?
Try a personal and friendly approach before seeking legal/ official path.

As the neighbour, I would suggest you go round when they are cooking and invite them into you house to realise the smell and then work together to create a solution.
