Plumbing

Plumber over complicated a simple job and now we have clanging pipes and reduced water pressure

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.43 PM

Hi, I'm hoping for advice to deal with a dodgy plumber. I asked for a very simple job, to extend some piping in my utility room by roughly 500mm so that I could place my washing machine further back. What the plumber convinced me that I needed was to replace my plastic piping with copper piping as plastic is 'only designed to last 5 years' so copper was the best long term option. I think the copper piping is a smaller diameter too. He said it would be £85 for his time and pennies for the material, well that was a lie and I should have asked for a more clear quote, materials were £65... almost as much as his time and £65 is not pennies to me. As soon as he installed the copper piping, the whole system became very loud and clangy, even when there was no water movement in the system. So we called him back and he installed a water hammer. The noise has reduced but the whole house sounds like a creaking ship, even when the water is not in use. Also the pressure has significantly reduced in the bathroom. He is due to come back to fix it tomorrow but we're both very unhappy. I want the copper removing and replacing with plastic piping. I think it was inappropriate to install copper and he pulling one over on us for more expensive material - am I right? And I don't want to pay for the materials that he removes as it was inappropriate to have installed it in the first place. We haven't paid him yet, I'm tempted to call in another plumber that a neighbour has recommended to fix it and to not pay the plumber who has botched up our plumbing system. We're feeling ripped off and conned for what is supposed to be a small job. I don't understand it though as I've pointed out loads of other work I want doing in the house and they're much larger jobs. So you'd think he'd do a good job to win the other work/jobs... So what should we do? Allow the OP to try again to fix his work or call in another plumber? We'd appreciate any advice!

I can't judge other people without listening there word but from what said , you didn't have problem before he touched the pipework and if the plumber accept that he should make it right but when he doesn't know about pipe's material that's mean he's not competent and that's different story.

Sounds like to me all he had to do was extend the original pipe work if all you was doing was moving your washing machine back but it’s always hard to say with out seeing the job. But definitely was a much easier and cheaper way of carrying out this job.

Only extending one run by 500mm would not effect pressure regardless of it being 15mm copper or barrier pipe. If the copper wasn’t clipped then you may get some noise if it’s hitting something else. The main manufacturers of Barrier pipe guarantee 50years plus.
