New build decorating, order of works
Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.43 PM
Hello, We are self builders in a new build property. We have had various tradesmen in but thought we'd do some or all of the decorating ourselves. I am not sure what order to do things in. Our walls are plastered. Current thinking order is 1) paint the walls (Inc mist coat) 2) get skirting, doors & architrave fitted 3) get flooring/carpet fitted. Is this the best order or is it better to wait until skirting down to do the top coat? Thanks in advance
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Get everything finished before painting and have good clean up before painting. Mist coat two top coats. Leave all good time to dry properly before carpets down.

1. Make sure the plaster is completely dry! I can't stress that enough.
2. Flooring should be done before the skirting is installed.
3. Fit everything else.
4. Protect and proceed to paint walls then woodwork.
This would be the most efficient way for tradesmen. Since you're doing it yourselves you can make step 1 the painting of walls and ceilings if that suits you better.

I’d get everything fitted, skirts, door frames, etc - except the carpets or any final flooring.
This means you can mist coat, fill and caulk any punch holes in the woodwork, and prepare the ceilings and walls for their coloured coats after the mist coat and then, undercoat and top coat the woodwork ready for carpet/flooring installation.
