Damp Proofing

Gap at bottom of cavity wall insulation

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.43 PM

While removing some rubble at the base of my cavity to stop a bridged dpc, I’ve taken out some of the cavity wall insulation (fibre wool) my question is am I now creating another problem with a thermal bridge which will only make the damp problem worse, will the gap need to be filled or worse case scenario all the insulation removed, thanks

It depends on how much of the insulation that has been removed. If it is only 6 inches (150mm) then I doubt there will be any effect as primarily heat loss occurs at higher levels, due to heat rising. Dont worry about it, solving the bridged dpm has been more beneficial by a long chalk.

As a specialist in rectifying poor cavity wall insulation installations, which often involves removing debris, just as you have, depending of course on how much of the cavity wall insulation you’ve lost, you do now run the risk of ‘cold spots’ occurring, which can lead to condensation and mould growth.

How’s you , yes if the gap is small it won’t matter much , but that said it is a very simple job to fill the gap with insulation when you are closing it back up and this would be the best thing to do
