Bathroom Fitting

Help! Bad finish on new bathroom part 2

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.24 PM

Hello again! So I have recently posted a question regarding the poor finish that a tradesman has left our new bathroom. I took on board all the advice I was given on here by other tradesmen and a totally appreciate all your answers and helpful advice. Thank you all very much. We have given him a chance to put right his mistakes, this happened about over a week ago. He has finished his work and is now demanding payment immediately. In my opinion and others who have seen the finished bathroom, it is now worse than it was before. I do not understand how or why this has happened? I really wish I could post pictures of what state our bathroom is in. Do not get me wrong the tiling is ok, it's the grout and the finish. It is terrible. We opted for white metro tiles and black grout. Which we have now been advised by other tradesmen that black grout was a bad choice of grout to have gone for, but we never knew the problems which occur with black grout until now. He has siliconed the sink and in the corners of the bathroom in BLACK silicone. He never asked once if we wanted black silicone, he has just gone about his thing and done this off his own back. It looks hideous. He has damaged the new vinyl flooring in two areas, which he admitted to one area and said he would pay for new vinyl and fitting. Now our original vinyl cost £80 without fitting. He has been and got a quote for £80 for vinyl and fitting, from a different supplier. He has also chipped our new sink vanity unit in 3 places. There are still chipped tiles, the grouting is horrific. Thick, clumpy in some place thin in others. We have now been advised by another tradesman that the pipes under the freestanding bath should not be visible. Ours are. I am at loss for words and what to do. We still have not payed him but he is demanding payment. Can I please get some advice from you kind people in what I need to do next?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

my reply to bathroom fitting is as follows; he has failed to inform you that black grout on white metro tiles is not advisable, however the grouting should have been washed off and pegged to remove excessive grout in joints , black silicone should not have been used ,any damage should be replaced free of charge , as far as the free standing bath , there are different types in different situations as coming out of the wall or floor standing , in any case they are usually in a shroud hidden , waste pipes have to have a trap and could go under the bath and under the floor but usualy in chrome as not to be offensive

As I see it here the issue is that he hasn't finished the bathroom to your satisfaction and therefore shouldn't be paid for the work. If he refuses to come back, if you could get another tradesman to say how much it will cost to rectify the mistakes then remove this from his final amount and offer to pay him the remainder (explaining why). This seems to be a fair way to deal with someone who won't come back or admit to their mistakes.

I've not long finished a white metro bathroom with a dark brown grout. There shouldn't be any problem at all with a dark grout along with a light tile,it's just a little more work. The feed pipes and waste should've been in chrome if they couldn't have been concealed. The damaged sink should be replaced at the builders expense. Black silicone should've been discussed but could've looked smart if done as a fine bead. I always tell my customers not to pay in full until pleased with the finish of work's,on any building projects I trust that helps Thanks, Peter

The last answer you got was a good answer just wanted to say that you should tell him that he will not be paid until all the rectifications are dealt with and if he cannot do them you will appoint a new contractor to finish off the rectifications to a standard you are happy with you and that you will deduct what you owe to the new contractor and pay the rest to him. Hope this helps
