How to raise a floor
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.39 PM
Edit: the space is 28sq metres. The £960 was to raise the floor to 25mm (we were then going to use xps boards to make up more height). We need to raise the garage floor a total of 75mm (including the height of the vinyl tiles we are putting on). The builders we have said to use screed, however, they got the calculations wrong and the price has increased! So, what’s the cheapest way to raise a floor?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

There is not a cheap and safe solution to do so, as if you don’t want screed, you ll have to install new floor joists and boards to reach the levels desired, saying so I would like to remember that the costly part in the projects is the labouring and not the materials which should be only 30% of the quote ( average). I don’t know how many square meter your garage is but the quote from your builder sound reasonable.

Hi there
As mentioned already, it depends on how many sqm need doing. The cost that you mentioned sounds fair, other alternative would be to install timber supports and timber joists which would probably work out the same price if not dearer due to labour costs.

It's not clear if this is for convenience or a regular conversion. If it will be a habitable space as part of the house, you will have needed to confirm to building regs. If it's just utility, you could achieve your height with 50 mm rigid insulation and 22mm flooring grade chipboard. If building control are involved, they may insist on digging out the floor so that you can install a membrane, 100 mm rigid insulation and whatever floor finish is required.

Firstly you have to be SURE the floor has a damp proof membrane.
Either already there or Sythaprufe on existing floor. This is extremely important.
After that a screened floor would probably be the most cost effective way of raising to the required height.
This will largely depend on their screening expertise. The price at 960? seems more than fair.

I would recommend installing pir insulation with a dpm to raise the floor to the desired height, with chipboard 18mm flooring sheets on top. Relatively easy to install therfore keeping labour costs down... two days max for one man.
