New Indian sandstone paving is moving

I have just had a company lay new Indian sandstone paving in my back garden. Lots of the stones are moving. It looks like the sand/cement mix they have used has been virtually dry as I have been able to lift a couple out by hand and the underside of the stones has nothing stuck to it. I have paid for materials but not for the labour yet. What should I do?

I wouldn’t pay for the labour until they have done the job properly if there moving clearly they’ve not been set properly and will always be same until sorted

First of all you should properly investigate the reason why your slabs didn’t stick , which can be for different reasons: The most common cause is that your pavers have been laid on an uneven aggregate bed. This greatly affects the structural integrity of your patio, making it more likely to break down underneath the surface. Alternatively, your paver may have been disturbed before the mortar had time to set, or more sub-base should have been used before laying. If this all sounds like a lot of work to remedy, the good news is that broken or loose slabs are far easier to fix than they seem, mix some building sand and cement 1:1 adding good quantity of water that gives you a liquid result, poor this under the slab after lifting it ( make sure is liquid in order to not rise the level of your slab) and relay the slab as it was ( make sure no one walks on it for at least 24 hour) and hit the slab couple of time with a rubber hammer which will help the adhesion. Also make sure that Mot type 1 ( hardcore) has been laid as Subase! is the Subase which is the real guarantor of the longevity of your patio , if there is not solid Subase then no point repairing as there will be always movement due to the unstable underneath! Regarding the outstanding payment, I would recommend to fix your patio first (as I said you can do that yourself if you don’t a little bit of work), and only after you done then you can deduct from their invoice the money and time you had to spend on it! To not pay them at all, wouldn’t be ideal as the only reliable for that should be the director of the company and not the labours or employees which works hard for a idiot who doesn’t know what reliability, costumer care and reputation is ! We lay Indian sandstone everyday and thi quite common that few slabs won’t stick properly, that’s why we always tell our costumer that we are really finished only 2 days after we finished the works , when we go back to double check everything in order to make sure that there is not loose parts nowhere after leaving the right to settle!

Unfortunately Indian sand stone is very pourius and I was taught to always slurry the backs of the slabs before laying and lay a full bed not dot and dab as when they dry it shows through also if the pointing is not a descant mix and strong enough this won’t help the slabs stay down.💪
