Painting melamine cupboards and MDF primed doors

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.39 PM

I am looking to paint some melamine coated cupboards. I believe the first step is to lightly sand and then I will use two coats of Zinsser BIN shellac based primer (which apparently can be used with both solvent and oil based top coats). I am hoping for advice on: 1) Choice on top coat paint for max durability (and also I would prefer a matt finish rather than gloss but happy to make some compromise for durability sake if need be) - I bought some F&B estate eggshell but didn't read good things about it!! Other options include Little Greene Intelligent Eggshell, Johnsons Aqua Satin, Dulux Satinwood, Tikkarula Everal Aqua, Tikkarila Helmi- there are too many options for me to decide! 2) Pretty much all of these companies seem to insist that its essential to use their own undercoats and adhesion primers, and I can't seem to believe thats true, I don't really want to fork out for them unless it really does make a huge difference to the outcome, because it would involve paying extra labour costs as well as materials!! 3) Which is the preferred paint for MDF white primed doors? Thank you

On the How To Do page on Zinsser they recommend Bulls Eye 123. However me personally I would go down the B.I.N route like you are suggesting. Most company's recommend there own primer just as a get out of jail free card as such. Stick with Zinsser and you can't go wrong. As regards top coats. Zinsser say you can choose whatever you like (within reason) Little Greene Intelligent Eggshell, Dulux Trade Satinwood, Dulux Trade Diamond Eggshell or Satinwood. As long as you leave it for 7 days (if possible) to fully cure and adhere you'll be fine.
