Laying natural stone tiles in a kitchen
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.39 PM
My builder has put 9.5 mm plywood down in the kitchen and hallway. I want to tile it with natural limestone tiles. Some say I can put detramatt and tile on top other days need to use cement boards? What is needed please!

Tile can be laid on plywood. But do not install tile directly on the plywood subfloor itself. Use an intervening layer of a sheet of thinner plywood.

If the ply is 18mm then ditra mat is fine as long as the ply is screwed down at 300mm centres. If you feel there is flex in the floor then use a 6mm or 10mm backerboard like Wedi board or jackerboard. This needs to be glued down with 6mm trowel and screwed down at 300mm centres. Personally i use the board system but is more labour intensive.

I would use a decoupled matting on top of the ply,an additional sheet of ply will provide no flexibility,I would lay the matting using an s2 adhesive also.

Do not tile on to plywood, bad practice and its not to British standard. Plywood is not as good as it was 20yrs ago and there are far more superior materials out there like cement board. If you cut corners and use inferior product be prepared for it to fail.
