Sewage smells downstairs when upstairs bath draining
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.39 PM
Whenever the upstairs bath is draining, the utility area where our washing machine is plumped in (directly one level below the bathroom) seems to exude sewage smells/gases. The washing machine in and outflow pipes as well as bathroom waste water stack pipe appear to run down a rhino wall in the utility area, so not immediately visible. Smells are limited or not present when no water is being drained. What are the main troubleshoots to identify the problem / fix?

Hello,
It appears that the water, when the bath is drained is backing up in your foul waste. To confirm this, fill your bath with water and lift the exterior inspection cover of the manhole your foul waste drains to. Release the water from the bath and witnessing the water draining away at a similar rate as it leaves the bath, and that the drain within the inspection chamber is free flowing.

Neil

It sounds like when you empty the bath, the suction created in the waste pipe work is sucking the water out of the trap or traps in the utility room below. This could be remedied by installing anti-syphon traps in the utility room or an air admittance valve on the waste pipe leading from the utility room before it meets the stack.
