Can I add the same AWG cable to extend the doorbell wire, even if it's a UK 3 pin plug end?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.39 PM

Hi Everyone, I hope you're all keeping safe; I have a video doorbell (not a ring or anything etc.) it comes with a UK 3 pin plug and is terminated with ring terminals (example: https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/61xL0hiXR5L._AC_SL1200_.jpg) However, the plug itself is very short, and when looking online for a more extended plug, it becomes very confusing as they sell AC/DC, DC-DC, AC AC and I can't find any that much my output of 12V. When checking the cable label as 24AWG "0.45mm", could I buy Insulated 24AWG 2 core wire and crimp female spades to make the connections and then end them with ring terminals? I'm unsure if this is the correct method and if this will give me any issues. For example, I know bell wire is low voltage, but if I increase the length of the wire itself, will AC drop? And should I be using the same AWG as the wire "24", or should I go more, i.e. 22 AWG etc. The plug itself has the following: AC Adapter Input: 100-240V - 50/60Hz 0.35A MAx Output: 12V = 1.0A Thanks! tl;dr bell wire is 24 AWG. Can I buy more 24 AWG and add it to make the wire longer, and if so, should I use a higher AWG, i.e. 22, for safety, even if the bell wire is low voltage.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

What do you mean by "the plug itself is very short"? If its an AC adapter that plugs in to a standard UK 3-pin socket then you are referring to the wire being short? 12V output so just extend the wire as you suggest. No big deal really.
