Outside light junction box

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.56 PM

Recently moved in and need to replace outside wall light. The previous owner installed a floodlight via an external junction box to an interior lighting circuit, with an inside on/off switch. I'm replacing it with an IP44 rated fitting which will have a 10W LED bulb. Do I still need to go via a junction box or can I wire the light fitting directly to the circuit and switch cables coming through the wall? Further to Worley Electrical's reply, for which I'm very grateful, can I ask why, if the interior cables have to come out through the wall to get to the junction box, that's different to them coming out through the wall and straight into the light fitting? The junction box is only a few centimetres from the junction box anyway. Sorry if this is a dumb question!

If the cable type coming from the fabric of the building is PVC Twin and Earth I would use an IP rated junction box as its not rated for outdoor use. I would then use an outdoor rated flexible cable from the junction box or encase the cable with a Plastic flexible conduit depending on the glanding opportunity's on the fitting. Always Happy to give advice but remember electrical work isn't easy and if you are still not sure, contact a local qualified electrician. Reply: This is how it’s generally done, you can have an internal junction box with Maintenance free connectors with the correct external rated cable going to the outside light fitting. The junction box is generally used to joint the cable from the inside of the building to a the correct type on the outside. And the junction box is located where it can be easily accessed should the cable or light need to be changed in the future. With electrical work there is generally more than one way to do things which depends on the installers preference which could be based on future use, maintainability or aesthetic’s.
