Can you build a false ceiling without drilling through the original ceiling
Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.56 PM
Hi, I have bought a house with asbestos artex ceiling. Is it possible to build a false ceiling beneath the artex ceiling without drilling through the artex (E.g. building the braces by screwing into the walls instead)? Thanks in advance.

Yeah should be able to attach frame to wall as long as you use 4 inch x 45mm frame and no longer than 3 metre frame sizes to stop the sagging with longer lengths

One of the options Stretch ceiling mate.

It depends on the size of the ceiling, in order to support itself without bracing down from the original ceiling and disturbing the artex you would have to use heavier sections of timber to cover the span without sagging in the middle. This could mean that you will reduce the ceiling height considerably. Alternatively you could seal the artex and get the ceiling plastered. As long as the artex is sealed and not disturbed it will remain safe.

As the last person pointed out you may get sagging in the middle of the ceiling if this frame is not properly supported. It may get worse once you fit plasterboard you the frame so I would suggest that you use ties from the joists above to support your ceiling. If you are trying to have a ceiling that stops the noise from above then this is how you do it plus use insulation.
