Clothes Smelling Musty After Using Washing Machine

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.42 PM

Hello, I've noticed recently that our clothes no longer smell fresh after being washed, and have a musty / damp sort of smell on them. I've tried the following things to solve this: - running empty machine on hot wash - using special washing machine product to clean / get rid of limescale (Calgon etc) - emptying out the filter at the base - cleaning the tablet compartment The machine will be OK after one of the above has been done but then the smell starts coming back. Any thoughts on what it could be and how to solve it? Thanks

The only way to cure this is to replace the waste hose. The problem starts from incorrect cycles where clothes aren’t washed properly or rinsed throughly. The water then sits in the pipe, due to the way they’re designed, and starts to ‘pong’. Bacteria grows and then you can’t get rid no matter how many cleaning products you use.

Hello, Basically, I would wager that your entire washing machine is contaminated with "black mould" This is resultant of a nice warm and moist environment. Unless you are able to disassemble the machine and thoroughly clean it, then I'm afraid its a new machine. The culprit area for this mould is predominantly around the fill section, more often than not, just above the powder tray, it can get quite bad. Hope this assists you. Best regards Neil

The causes can be numerous and require a process of elimination to work out the exact issue. I'd suggest you clean your waste pipe. You might find there is a blockage in it, and if you have a U-shaped pipe that is common where it connects, clean that out by unscrewing it. It's commonly half-blocked with all kinds of debris. Debris might also be blocking the U pipe, normally hair, etc gets stuck in there, this causes a narrowing of the pipe and you end up with backwash. I dealt with one customer who nearly threw their machine out, but I saved them that by finding the problem as this issue. After emptying the waste hose and U shapes pipe, I advise you to backwash with your hose the filter at the bottom, this can also have junk, bring your washing machine outside for this process and keep wiring away from getting wet.
