Turned off lighting circuit to change a ceiling lamp, but main circuit breaker still trips

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.41 PM

Hello, I was installing a new ceiling lamp and so I turned off the lighting circuit for that room at the circuit board. However, when I touched the neutral and earth wires together the main circuit breaker tripped. Does that mean there is a problem with the wiring?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If you are talking about the RCD tripping, it will trip, if the neutral and earth are touched together, even with the MCB switched off. As an MCB is single pole and an RCD is Double Pole. If you do it next time, just switch or trip the RCD off then both L& N are isolated.

You need a qualified electrician to fit lights as wiring could be wired in different ways.

It’s illegal to work on electricity unless your competent as you don’t know what has happened then you shouldn’t be working on the electrics. Call an electrician
