Garden Canopy with Safety Glass Over Fence

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.41 PM

Hi, I hope this is the right place to ask this question but my neighbour has build a quite large garden canopy in front of their extention. It is open on three sides however one side is right up against the fence which separates both properties. They have put safety glass to cover the gap between the fence and the top of the canopy but it is poorly fitted and I am worried in a string gust of wind - it may fall into my garden. Is there anything i can do? i spoke to my neighbours and they said the builders know what they are doing but its a poor standard of work and the top of the glass also has roof flashing against a baton of wood. I am concerned- any advice would be appreciated.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If your not happy the I would seek a second opinion or maybe get someone qualified to come have a look at it. Sounds like one of them make it work jobs.

If you’re not happy, talk to the local planning department to ensure it meets planning rules, they may send an enforcement officer out to check its build quality, there is a down side, having good neighbours is important for a peaceful life. Planning will give you an unbiased decision

If it's bigger than 15m2 and less than 1 m from your boundary all the materials need to be fire-resistant. If it's more than 30m2 then building control should have been notified.

If you have concerns about safety on the party/boundary wall, I suggest contacting the council enforcement team, they can send a building inspector out to check under the dangerous structures act and unlike a second opinion from a builder, they have the power to enforce action to take it down or make it more secure
