New extension when we already share one with neighbour

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.41 PM

Hi, we are interested in building a bigger extension on our terraced house. But we already share a small pitched roof extension with our neighbour which contains mirroring kitchen and bathroom, we think it dates back to 90s. Ideally we'd open out a lot more with a bigger open plan kitchen and family room extension. We certainly have the space but can't see how it could be done without demolishing our half of the existing structure. Can this be done, and would we still have to build out our new extension from neighbour in order not to leave them with half a structure? I would post a photo but there isn't a facility to do that I don't think. Thanks Chris

Hi there without pictures its hard to understand. In the building trade everything can be over come. What i suggest is to find a competent builder to come have a look and im positive he will have a 2 second look and give you a solution. Nothing is impossible.

It can be done you would need a party wall agreement to work on the dividing wall. This should include drawings and a method statement .to the works being proposed. And how the builder intended to finish off any roofwork . And foundation up to the existing structure.

I would have to see it but anything is possible with liaison from the local authority It seems to me that it's completely possible It may involve a party wall agreement with your neighbours and the pitched roof can It modified to suite the new structure.

Hi there, party wall agreement is definitely worth getting but would it not be possible to leave the existing structure as is and install rsj’s to open it up, whilst using a modern style flat roof. This also gives you the option of skypods for additional light.
