Do I need a lintel above doors on single story garage

I'm wanting to get my 1800mm wide window on the side of my single skin 60's brick garage swapped out for some french doors of the same width. The current window doesn't have a lintel above, just a soldier course, however should I be putting a lintel in there when I swap out the window for doors? Door fitter who came round to have a look reckoned I didn't need one but I wanted to ask around just to be sure. There is no further brickwork above the soldier course, just the timber wall plate, joists, rafters etc. Thanks :)

if the roof timbers are resting on the wall plate above the new door you defo need a lintel. you could use two timbers spiked together with dpc at the ends on a 150mm rest either side.if its getting rough casted above the easiest way is a concrete lintel with a 150mm rest either side.

Timber don't last you have the weight of roof sitting on your French doors I think you need a lintel 150 mm bearing

Personally I would acrow and prop up the internal rafters before taking the window out and remove the soldier course if possible first to give you access to put a lintel or Angeline back in to take the weight of the roof. Mortar and slate any gaps for movement.I hope this is helpful to you 👍

Definitely need lintel if roof joists are on the side where doors are going as all the Wight is load bearing on wall plate above soldier course, its just old school house builders that would of normally built around the timber window frame as most old buildings don't have them In. Can be a nightmare to do In the wrong hands, I would defo say put one in for peace of mind

Yes you will need to put an L shaped lintol in with 150mm bearing both sides. You can then put the soldier course back over the lintol.
