repainting a wooden ledge in bathroom

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.41 PM

What type of paint do i need for freshening up the paint on a wooden around bathroom. Can I just use the same 'bathroom paint' used on walls? Thanks for your help.

Depending on what has been used before the normal answer would be no. You will need to ascertain what it has already been coated with. Many amateurs make the mistake of just continuing with emulsion on any woodwork in any room, big mistake. any type of emulsion is not really formulated for woodwork & especially if the wood has already been treated with paint designed for interior woodwork such as Satinwood, Gloss or Matt water or oil-based. Prepare the wood by sanding thoroughly or prime with a specialist primer if it has been varnished. For finishing use a reasonably good brand of wood finish such as Ronseal 2 in One primer finish paint in either Satin, Matt or Gloss obtainable online through Amazon (it may be available in your local DIY/Paint store but not B & Q The Range carry 750mil cans sufficient for small jobs) It is a water-based product & dries in around & hour for recoating. Alway 2nd coat with the same paint especially if you use satin as it gives a much better finish. Never use any Emulsion paint for woodwork. Hope this has been useful & educational. If in doubt call in a professional for advice as seeing the problem will be more beneficial than making assumptions

I personally would use oil based undercoat and gloss

I would recommend a bathroom wood paint that is moisture resistant.

Hi I’m assuming you have used a bathroom emulsion for the walls. Emulsion is not really designed to go on wood. The best practice is to lightly sand the current surface so that the shine is taken off and the paint has something to grip on to. Apply a coat of undercoat (the tin will state how long to leave it before the next coat) Once dry put on your gloss/satin paint. Check that your undercoat is suitable for your top coat. Water based (quick drying) paint should only be used with water based undercoat and oil undercoat for oil based top coat. The cleaning instructions on the tin will tell you if it’s oil or water based - Oil based paint is cleaned/thinned with white spirit and water based is cleaned with soap and cold water. Hope this helps 👍🏻

No dont use the same paint you are useing on the walls. Just sand down with some p240 and apply two coats of any oil based gloss eggshell or satinwood. Do not use a water based finish it will crack and peel.
