Line walls then paint after plastering - or just paint after plastering?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.41 PM

I have removed old lining paper and have employed a plastered to plaster (and board in some places) the walls. After this I should have good walls (i.e. no cracks/blown plaster/holes) so should I line the walls and then paint, or just paint. I am not trying to cover up any horrors with the lining paper, but seeking to get the nicest finish. I don't want make unnecessary work but would like to do it properly. Thank you!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

After a good plaster should be only painting with light sanding and a little bit of fill.

As already stated but remember to give the fresh plaster a mist coat (roughly 40% water 60% paint) of paint preferably white This will stop the plaster soaking up your paint

As stated above, shouldn’t need lining. Also I’d use a contract matt for the first coat, thinned with 40% clean water, this will soak into the plaster abs give a good base for any top coats. If you don’t thin the paint, it could start peeling off and you’d have a lot of work to do to correct it

I would apply a white wash first 50/50 . This way if the walls perfect you will see straight away with the wall coverage, and if it’s got any gashes they will appear easy , then apply easy fill 45 . This is a British gypsum product and I would highly recommend it . Leave for 45 mins and then lightly sand . Now you should have a perfect wall and not requiring wall paper

Should have no need for lining paper on new plaster but need to wait couple of weeks to fully dry before any mist coat is applied to new plaster as stated in comments.

Applying a mist coat once the plaster has dried out then painting should be perfectly sufficient

After a good plasters been should only need to sand down a little then paint. Just remember to water down your first quote of paint as the plaster soaks the water out the paint therefore it flakes if not watered down.

If the plasterer has done his jobproperly then just do a mist coat over the plaster and then paint as normal. No need for extra cost of lining

Once it has been plastered as long as its done by a good plasterer it shouldn’t need any sanding or filling, just straight to painting

As stated above, asking as the plasterer has done a decent job, no lining paper will be needed. As long as the paint prep is done correctly by using a mist coat your walls should be looking great.

After a good plasterer has been, should only need a light sand and a mist coat of paint before the neat coat. Mist coat 40% Water 60% Paint.

The plaster should give a nice smooth finish so a white wash coat 50/50 paint to water then a couple coats of paint after should look great! I prefer this finish to lined paper but both would look good if the job is done properly :D Hope this helps

If the plastering is to a good standard you shouldn’t need to lining paper the walls. Mist coat of paint roughly 50/50 with water and white emoltion this will seal the wall as will soak in ready for the next stage of decorating. Also will show any minor blemishes so you can fill/sand ready for final painting. Remember plastering is a background for decorating a bit like a blank canvas.

Hi there There is definitely no need to paper any new plaster. I always advise about a week before painting and using a 60-40% emulsion/water mix usually 2 coats before applying finishing coats this just allows the emulsion to dry naturally instead of pulling into high suction areas and pealing away. Thank you A J Plastering
