Can a gas hob and oven both use 45amp CCU by downgrading mbc breaker to a 20amp?

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.43 PM

My gas oven and hob are currently plugged in using plug sockets. I have a cooker connection unit installed that is a 45amp cooker outlet connection plate. I want both appliances to be connected to this single cooker connection unit. The suggestion is that this can be achieved and will be safe by changing the mbc to a 20amp breaker. Would this work?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Downgrading the mcb from what size? A 32 amp perhaps? If the cable is 6mm, If it is no need as the mcb protects the cable in all cases not the appliances. Also what kw is the oven? Probably needs looking at by an electrician to be honest.

Fuses protect the circuit cable, not the appliances, as Deacon said. Likely it will be a standard cooker circuit so yes just connect both. A gas hob just uses a negligible amount of power to operate the spark ignition.

It would certainly depend on what the total load would be for the oven in Amps. The gas hob only requires an ignition switch to ignite the gas hob. I would strongly recommend contacting your local electrician who should be able to advise you accordingly, hope this helps.

Derate mcb to 32 or 20 A and change cooker outlet plate to either Spurs or twin socket if you have room. If hob and oven have a plug on then they need protection at 13 a or less ( refer to manufacturers instructions) so by simply derating mcb to 20 A isn’t achieving this. You must still fuse down via either a fused spur or plug.

In theory yes. Get an electrician to do it though.

That's possible, however, I suspect from the 45amp you mentioned that you have an older fuse board so I will encourage you to get an electrician to look at the full picture and take that burden away from you.
