Garden Clearance job in South Wales

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.43 PM

I was told it was a two day job, and agreed to pay a fee. The job actually took 9 hours and 15 mins, spread over 2 days. The first day 3 workers came at 8:30 and left at 1:30, with the job almost finished. If they had stayed longer say till 4:30 the gargen would have been finished. I sent a text to the company and was told that the green waste needed to be disposed of, and the workers dropped at home hence the early finish. On the second day, two workers arrived at 8:30 and had finished the garden by 12:45. They left and once again did not complete a full days job. Don't get me wrong the workers did a great job, but I am only willing to pay a fair price for the work actually completed which was a total of 9 hours and 15 minutes. My complaint is I should be given a reduction in the price as this clearly not a 2 day job. The company are refusing to negotiate a fairer price, and are threatening legal action if I do not pay immediately. Another question would be how long do I have to settle an invoice in dispute? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I want to pay a fair price, but not get ripped off. I am getting a mixed message from the feedback. A two day job to me means 8 hours a day, not leaving at 1:30 & 12:45. Surely a quote for one day should have been given?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You say its its two day job so 16 hours of time but based on how many people working? One? If its based on just two guys then I'd say you have been given a fair estimate. But that isn't the issue. You have agreed the work you agreed a price and the work was done. If the company sent in 20 guys and had the job completed in an hour are you still expecting them all in for two full days? I would think its fair to pay for the works you agreed.

Did they remove/dispose of anything from the garden. Often the work off-site is not seen by the customer. If you was happy with the quote and the output of the job, why worry?

If you agreed to pay day rate then leaving at those times isn't acceptable. A day rate is for the “day”, hours should therefore reflect that. If you paid for the job as a “price” job then irrespective if it takes 2 days or one, it's unfair too not pay the tradesman the price agreed. Its only fair too Pay the company their money as they have a living to earn.

An invoice is not a legally binding document as both parties have to sign agreement. I would say you have not had your expectations met for hours worked by these landscapers but it is quite normal for their days work to be 6 hours due to the physicality of the job. However the second day fell short of that by some margin and the first day was only 5 hours so I think you are right to dispute the price.
