Does coping on top of garden wall need pointing?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.24 PM

Hi, would really appreciate some help please! I've just had a wall built around the perimeter of my property. It was block and render with large overhanging coping stone which don't fit snug and there are gaps between. I assumed these were to be filled / pointed but the workers have left and when I pointed it out, he came back today and said he would fill the joints if I wanted, but when it rains the cement would drip down and leave green stains on the wall and that it had happened with a previous client. When I've looked for info online it suggests it should be pointed. Please can you advise. Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Yes they should be pointed , if the copes are NOT pointed rain water will travel in between them & then work its way into your wall . This could then start spauling your roughcast . Copes should be pointed & they should have a overhang from the wall , theres a capillary grove on the copes which allow rain water to drip off them & stay away from the wall . Thanks

Coppings should always be pointed . personally I lick the copping as I am laying them with my trowel just to fill the joists and when the mortar has dried enough not to smudge . Repoint .👍I hope this helps you.
